Overview

Heating Engineer in Coventry — what it is, who it's for, when it's needed.

What central heating work covers

Full system diagnostics, radiator removal and replacement, towel-rail swaps, system balancing, TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) upgrades, motorised valve replacement, magnetic filter installation, system pressurisation, expansion vessel re-charge, automatic bypass valve fitting, smart thermostat installation (Hive, Nest, Tado, Drayton), zone valves, and full system conversions from open-vent to sealed.

Who it's for

Homeowners with cold rooms, noisy radiators, or rising energy bills. Landlords needing a system that won't generate a winter call-out every fortnight. Anyone planning a renovation where the radiator layout, sizing or pipework needs reworking around new room uses.

When you need a heating engineer

When some radiators heat and others don't, when the boiler short-cycles (fires up, drops out, fires up again), when there's a banging or kettling noise from the boiler or pipes, when the pressure keeps dropping below 1 bar, or when one room never reaches the thermostat setting.

Why a professional matters

Heating system faults are rarely where the symptom shows. A cold upstairs radiator is usually a balancing or sludge issue — not a radiator failure. Replacing the radiator without fixing the cause means the new one runs cold inside 18 months. A trained engineer reads the system, not just the part.

What happens if it's ignored

The cost of waiting.

An unhealthy heating system gets more expensive every month it runs.

Common mistakes we see

  • Adding water repeatedly to keep pressure up — fixes the symptom, accelerates the corrosion.
  • Bleeding radiators monthly — air keeps coming back because there's a hydrogen-generating reaction inside the system.
  • Fitting a new radiator without flushing the dirty water out — the new one corrodes from day one.
  • Skipping the magnetic filter — the cheapest insurance policy a heating system can have.
  • Setting TRVs and the room stat to fight each other — neither ever settles.

Wasted energy bills

A sludged system makes the boiler work 15–25% harder to heat the same rooms. That's hundreds of pounds a year being burned to push water through restriction.

Boiler failure

Sludge and corrosion are the #1 cause of premature boiler replacement. Heat exchangers blocked with magnetite are a £2,400 problem dressed up as an £80 inhibitor problem.

Pump and motorised valve failure

Restricted flow burns out pumps and seizes motorised valve heads — both leave you with no heat in the middle of a January cold snap.

Pinhole leaks on radiators

Internal corrosion eats radiators from the inside. The first sign is a brown rust stain on a carpet — the radiator is already finished by then.

Our process

A clear, documented system — every visit, every job.

  1. 01

    1. Full system survey

We check flow and return temperatures at every radiator, pressure-test the system, sample the system water for inhibitor and magnetite levels, and identify which faults are causing which symptoms.

  2. 02

    2. Diagnosis report

Plain-English summary of what we found, with photos. You see exactly what's wrong and what fixing it actually involves.

  3. 03

    3. Written, fixed-price quote

Itemised — radiators, valves, filters, labour. Optional upgrades (smart stats, zoning, magnetic filter) priced separately so you choose.

  4. 04

    4. Work executed in sequence

Powerflush or chemical clean first if needed, then radiator/valve/control work, then balancing, then commissioning.

  5. 05

    5. Commissioning & handover

Every radiator balanced to spec, flow/return temps logged, controls demonstrated, paperwork issued.

Benefits

What you actually get.

Lower bills

A properly balanced, clean system can drop gas bills 10–20% in a typical 3-bed semi.

Warm rooms, evenly

No more 'cold corner' upstairs or radiator that's hot at the top and cold at the bottom.

Quieter operation

Kettling, ticking and banging usually disappear once the system is clean and balanced.

Longer boiler life

Most boilers last 12–15 years on a clean system vs 7–9 on a neglected one.

Smart control compatibility

Full integration of Hive, Nest, Tado and Drayton with zoning where the property allows it.

Documented work

Photos and readings before, during and after. Useful for insurance, sale of property, or just peace of mind.

In depth

Materials, methods and variations.

Central heating in West Midlands housing stock varies wildly — from gravity-fed open-vent systems in pre-war terraces to fully-zoned sealed S-plan systems in modern builds. Knowing which you have determines almost every decision we make.

Discuss your project

System types we work on

Open-vent (tank in loft, F&E tank, cylinder for hot water) — common in Coventry pre-1995 housing. Sealed (filling loop, expansion vessel, no tank in loft) — modern combi installs and many post-2000 system boiler installs. S-plan and Y-plan zoned systems. Fully-pumped systems with motorised mid-position or 2-port valves.

Radiator options

Type 11, 21 and 22 panel radiators sized to BS EN 442. Vertical radiators for spaces where horizontal length is limited (hallways, narrow walls). Designer radiators (Stelrad Vita, Reina, Bisque). Towel rails — electric, dual-fuel and central-heating-only. All radiators sized using a proper room-by-room heat-loss calc, not 'one size bigger than what was there'.

Controls & zoning

TRVs on every radiator except the room with the wall thermostat (Building Regs Part L). Smart thermostats with learning algorithms (Nest, Tado). Hard-wired controls (Drayton Wiser, Honeywell evohome) where zoning multiple rooms is the priority. Boiler Plus compliance on every new boiler install.

Water treatment

Sentinel X100 inhibitor at correct dosage. X400 sludge remover for chemical clean. MC1 noise reducer where kettling persists. Magnetic filtration (Adey MagnaClean Pro2, Spirotech) installed on the return as standard on every system we touch.

Residential vs commercial

Commercial systems typically run at higher flow temps, use larger-bore primaries, and require BSRIA-style commissioning records. We work primarily residential but have done small commercial (offices under 200m²) where the engineering principles are the same.

FAQ

Heating —
straight answers.

Still unsure? Call 07385 732137 — no obligation.

  • Almost always a balancing or sludge issue, not a radiator failure. Hot water takes the path of least resistance — usually the downstairs circuit. Balancing the lockshield valves redirects flow correctly. If the system is also sludged, a chemical clean or powerflush will be needed first.
