A bathroom is the wettest room in your house. Done badly, water gets behind tiles, into joists, and into the ceiling below — usually invisibly for two years before the staining appears. Tiles laid on bare plasterboard without primer, or with adhesive trowelled too thin, debond within 2–3 years. Replacing them often means a complete strip-back.
