Overview

Gas Safe Engineer in Coventry — what it is, who it's for, when it's needed.

What gas work covers

Gas cooker disconnection and reconnection, freestanding range cooker installation, gas hob fitting, gas oven installation, bayonet-fitting replacement, isolation valve fitting, gas tightness testing, gas leak detection and repair, landlord gas safety certificates (CP12), commercial gas safety records (CP42), and gas pipework alterations including upsizing for higher-load appliances.

Who it's for

Homeowners installing or replacing gas appliances, landlords needing annual CP12 certificates for rental properties, letting agents managing compliance across multiple addresses, and anyone who smells gas — even faintly — and wants it investigated properly.

When you need a Gas Safe engineer

Legally, any work that affects a gas appliance, gas pipework, or gas meter must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That includes connecting a new cooker. If your supplier asks for a tightness test, if a sale or remortgage needs a gas safety record, or if you can smell gas — call us.

Why a Gas Safe registered engineer matters

Unregistered gas work is illegal under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Beyond legality, it kills people every year — typically through carbon monoxide poisoning from incorrectly fitted appliances or undersized flues. Gas Safe registration is non-negotiable, and we carry the card on every visit.

What happens if it's ignored

The cost of waiting.

Gas faults are silent until they aren't. By the time symptoms appear, the situation is usually already serious.

Common mistakes we see

  • Connecting a cooker using PTFE tape instead of approved jointing compound on conical fittings.
  • Re-using bayonet hoses past their 5-year expiry stamp.
  • Skipping the tightness test after any work on the gas system — the only proof the joint is actually sound.
  • Using a flexible hose on a hob (it must be rigid pipework — flexibles are cooker-only).
  • Leaving an isolation valve inaccessible behind an appliance — fails the next inspection automatically.

Carbon monoxide poisoning

CO is colourless, odourless, and binds to haemoglobin 240× more readily than oxygen. Symptoms start as headaches and tiredness — easily blamed on a cold or stress until it's too late.

Explosion risk

Natural gas leaks in enclosed spaces reach explosive concentration (5–15% in air) faster than most people realise. A single static spark is enough.

Insurance void

Damage from non-Gas-Safe-certified work is routinely excluded from buildings insurance. A £200 'mate's rates' install becomes a £180,000 rebuild conversation.

Legal liability for landlords

Failure to provide a valid CP12 is a criminal offence and unlimited fine. Several Coventry landlords have been prosecuted in the last 24 months — none of them thought it would be them.

Our process

A clear, documented system — every visit, every job.

  1. 01

    1. Card-visible introduction

Gas Safe card shown on arrival — registration number, ID photo, qualification dates. Verify us on the Gas Safe Register before we lift a tool if you want to.

  2. 02

    2. Visual inspection

Meter location, ECV (emergency control valve), pipework route, existing appliance condition, ventilation, flue (where applicable).

  3. 03

    3. Tightness test

Standing pressure test on the existing system before any work. If it's leaking already, we find that first — not after we've added a new appliance.

  4. 04

    4. Work executed to GSIUR 1998

Materials, joints and pipe-sizing to current standards. Approved jointing compound, correct support intervals, accessible isolation valves.

  5. 05

    5. Post-work tightness test & certification

Second tightness test after work. Combustion analysis on appliances. Certificate (CP12 / installation cert) issued same day, logged with Gas Safe Register.

Benefits

What you actually get.

Safety

Every joint pressure-tested. Every appliance combustion-tested. Every install certified.

Legal compliance

CP12 issued same day for landlords. Installation certificates logged with the Gas Safe Register and emailed to you.

Insurance valid

Documented Gas Safe work keeps your buildings insurance valid — and your mortgage lender happy.

Peace of mind

Sleep knowing the work meets the same standards as a new-build install.

Future-proofed

Pipe sizing checked for future appliance upgrades — no rework when you swap to a higher-load range cooker.

Documented

Photos, test readings and certificates on file — useful for sale, remortgage, or insurance claim.

In depth

Materials, methods and variations.

Gas is the single most regulated trade in UK housing. Knowing the regulations isn't optional — and the right method depends on the appliance, the property and the existing installation.

Discuss your project

Appliances we install

Freestanding gas cookers, range cookers (Stoves, Rangemaster, Belling), gas hobs (Bosch, Siemens, Neff, AEG), gas ovens, gas fires (decorative and live-fuel-effect), and freestanding gas heaters. Every install includes correct isolation, pressure check and appliance commissioning.

CP12 landlord certificates

Every gas appliance, flue and pipework run inspected. Tightness test, combustion analysis, ventilation check, safety device test. Certificate issued same day, valid 12 months, lodged with Gas Safe and emailed to you and your letting agent if applicable.

Gas leak investigation

Standing pressure test to confirm a leak, then leak detection spray and electronic gas sniffer to locate. We don't replace pipework on suspicion — we find the leak and fix the specific joint or section.

Pipework alterations

Pipe sizing to BS 6891 — many existing 15mm runs are undersized for modern range cookers and need upgrading to 22mm. We do that properly, with new pressure-tested sections, not by adding adapters.

Residential vs commercial gas work

Commercial gas work (over 35kW total appliance load or in a commercial premises) requires CCN1 + COMCAT qualifications and a CP42 certificate format. Smaller commercial we cover — heavier industrial work we'll refer to a specialist we trust.
